The Power of Intervening With Kindness

Sometimes, it only takes one moment to change the course of a life.

Research shows that suicide is often an impulsive decision—even when there has been planning. A person may carry thoughts or intentions for weeks, months, or even years, but the choice to act often happens in a short, vulnerable window of time. That means there’s also a window of hope—a moment where a word, a gesture, or an act of compassion can interrupt despair and give someone the strength to hold on.

That’s why intervening with kindness matters so much.

When someone is feeling their lowest, they may believe they are invisible, unworthy, or beyond help. But when we show up with genuine care (whether it’s a smile, a listening ear, or a simple gift) we can plant a seed of connection. That seed can grow into hope, and hope changes everything. A kind word today can make tomorrow feel possible. A moment of compassion can change not just a day, but a week, a month… even a lifetime.

At Gilly’s Friends, our mission is to create those moments. Through Gilly’s Favorite Things, we share bags filled with some of Jordan’s favorite snacks and treats—along with a message that says, You are loved. You matter. They may seem like small gifts, but they’re much more than that. They are tangible reminders that someone sees you, someone cares, and someone believes your life matters.

Jordan was a champion for anyone who felt left out, different, or alone. We honor his legacy by continuing that work and step into those critical moments with kindness, compassion, and love. You never know when the right moment will come. You never know when your kindness will be the reason someone decides to stay.

Let’s keep showing up for one another. Let’s keep creating moments that interrupt despair and replace it with hope. Together, we can change trajectories—and maybe even save lives.
